This series is designed to take the mystery out of Relational Frame Theory.  We've found that the reason RFT tends to "go over your head" is because, when you learn it, it isn't coming out of your head.  Listening and following along with something is very distinct from speaking with understanding.  Not to take away anything from listening and following along, but speaking with understanding is a different level of learning

Who this is for: This is designed for people with training as a BCBA or a working understanding of the terms BCBA's use.  Things like "Discriminative Stimulus" and "Generalization" and "Negative Reinforcement."  Beyond that, it's for a people with an interest in more flexibly and creatively applying things like PEAK, AIM, or the DNA-V.

What it is: This is an online, 10 session  Type II CE series designed to get you conversant in the basic language of RFT.  In 10, 1 hour sessions, you’ll walk away being able to explain, in a way anyone can understand:

  • What Relational Frame Theory is.

  • What Arbitrarily Applicable Derived Relational Responding means.

  • The three key features of an Arbitrarily Applicable Derived Relational Response including

    • Mutual Entailment

    • Combinatorial Entailment

    • Transformation of Stimulus Function

  • Relational operants like coordination, opposition, comparison, temporal, and deictics

  • The implications of this for what makes humans wonderful (e.g., we figured out ice cream!!) and terrible (e.g., war and suicide).

What you get

  • 10 Live course sessions with ongoing access to course recordings.

  • Workbooks and data collection sheets for each course session to help practice the material.

  • Copies of all the slides.

  • 10 Type II CEs for completing all modules.

  • Three chapters of a book in progress: Human Organizations.  Those first three chapters define what it is to be a human being according to an RFT model of language and thinking.

Before you register, consider this:

  • This isn’t your typical CE experience.  There’s going to be work to do.  During sessions, you'll be asked to practice along with the material by saying things out loud.  This isn't material you will passively absorb.  If you register, plan on being present and engaged with the content.

  • In between sessions, you'll be asked to practice the material.  How much practice is required will vary from person to person.  We recommend planning on 10-15 minutes a day.

  • NOTE - we used to call on people during sessions.  We don't do that anymore.  We've discovered that it wasn't so necessary and took that practice out.

  • Finally, our promise is that, if you participate as designed, you're really going to learn something.  Learning things is uncomfortable!  There will be times you feel like you're not getting it, confused, like you're in over your head, etc.  Be ready to experience those feelings!  If you do the work, it will all come together in the end.

That said, our commitment is that this be fun.  Have you ever tried to read the purple book?  This is going to be the opposite of reading the purple book.

Facilitated by: Scott Herbst, PhD, BCBA.  Scott got his PhD from the University of Nevada, Reno, studied RFT with Steve Hayes, has taught numerous graduate level courses on RFT, and is an author on numerous studies dealing with RFT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.  He's the President of the Illinois Association for Behavior Analysis, on the editorial boards of the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management and Behavior and Social Issues.  Aside from doing things like this, he works with organizations applying principles of language to team-communication, performance management, and employee engagement.
